Jac mixed each drop with amber, pulled and twisted with pliers and a knife forming teardrop red pearls. She would show them blood money.

Realistic, real
I thought her tattoo was very realistic. But as people saw the tanned Jesus on her shoulder crying tears of blood, they began to cross themselves. Some knelt. Some hissed as she reached her towel and her friend wiped away the signs that she had scratched herself on the lava rocks as she climbed out of the water. His eyes were blue.
The day Liam dove into the river
They still talk about the day Liam dove into the river, stayed down and then came up again, blood streaming down his face. They still talk about his da and his uncle jumping in together and his da reaching him and pulling him to the shore and carrying him across the field to the road and getting a ride to the hospital and Liam being stitched up and sent home and being kept off school for a week. They still talk about him waking up and asking for his da and then his uncle. They still talk about his uncle.

His reply, when I asked him who would take precedence, me or his family, was brutally clear
I do not share blood with you.
We share only words and metal.
Blood is the victor.
The pink light of night
The pink light of night loosened thoughts and tongues; blood pulsed and sped and fizzed and choked off words. But by then words did not matter.
Love beauty beware
No rose without a thorn
No blood-red petals without the power to rip.
Weak flowers wave pale against a cotton sky
but crimson tearing is the heart.
The Janitor
Bruno pulled the rake through the clodded sand. It stank of iron and ammonia but at least now the flies had stopped their gorging; now they no longer funnelled fatly up around Bruno’s face when he disturbed them. He sweated and choked in the smoky still air. He swallowed, hawked and spat, then swallowed again when he saw what his rake had dragged up. The lion’s tooth caught the light from the guttering torches around the arena.
He picked up the tooth and turned it over in his hand. It was jagged at the base so it was broken, it had not just dropped from the jaw of one of the older lions, the ones who were too tired to attack until starved and tormented with long stabbing spears. One of the traitors must have fluked a lucky blow before he met his divine punishment or perhaps the lions had butted heads in the ripping and rending of flesh, the cracking of bone.
Bruno slipped the tooth into his pouch. He would hand it in to his gangmaster when the sand in the arena was ready for the next day’s bloodletting. It might be worth an extra piece of bread. He spat and began to rake again.

Tree fallen
Hey, where’s the axe?
[Branches shiver]
I’ll take the axe if you want the chain saw.
[Twigs flex and curl]
[Steel slips]
[Blood and sap slide]
Blood for biscuits
I shouldn’t have told Stefan I’d swapped blood for biscuits, or maybe not in those words. He went all twilighty on me, snarling and snapping and snapping at my throat. It took me all my strength to push him away and over and hold him down on the ground. I tried to explain that I just had a sweet, sharp, tooth – I hadn’t given up, no, of course not, but sometimes I just fancied a nice biscuit, washed down with a nice cup of tea – and off he went again, eyes all white, slathering and barking and making a hell of a noise. Tea and biscuits. Nice. Of course, as I told him, my foot on his neck, he’s old eastern empire, he wouldn’t have tea, but I’m sure he’d kill for a cream cake and a coff- You know, sometimes you just can’t say anything without someone going all mad wolf snarling and leaping out the window. He’ll be back when he’s killed horribly. Enough to put you off your biscuits. I’ll keep the whole vegetarian thing to myself for a while I think.
Salt and sauce
The fame, the glory, a moment in the sun. That’s why I’m doing this. I may be tomorrow’s chip paper but your blood’s my salt and sauce.
