clouds chalk lines in the sky blue sky
the wind has dropped but the palms still sway
the birds are silent
and now the sky is grey
Sunrise there, way over there,
Way over beyond where the earth bends its shoulder
To see where the morning might come from
Sunrise that colour, the colour of that flower,
That flower, oh you know it,
That flower whose heads hang on the sunken green footways
Where carts used to trundle
And the cumulonimbus, the clouds that a child drew,
The clouds of a fluffy-inked ankle tattoo,
They now frame the distance of soon silver linings
And the sunrise lightens my darkness.
I stayed awake
all night
to ensure my heart
did not burst into flames
in the morning
the clouds were red
clouds pile upon clouds
early night before darkness
blurred thoughts of we two
programmed to see patterns
I see waves crashing on rocks
tigers dancing
chessmen contemplating their fate
then
a sudden breeze
sweeps the clouds like leaves
from the north
and I think again
of reality
clouds beyond clouds
charcoal layers far horizon
pewter smeared across, an artist’s chalk
birdsong breaking silence
Cherry blossom clouds
I close my eyes and you dream
The east wind wakes us
pale moon, stars, chalk clouds
snow on the distant mountains
night waiting, or night, waiting
My summer is ending
and the red leaves shiver
before the fall.
My summer is ending
I see your spring arrive
fresh green from white.
My summer is ending
Your faces are sun-shot
sparkling futures.
And the sun and the warmth
of near cloudless sky
my summer is ending.
