on a sunny day I walked
breathing in the riverside shade
birdsong above me circled and centred me
and I missed you with a fierceness

I cannot bring to mind

I cannot bring to mind my dream from yesterday
though I know that it must run its course
before I begin anew.
I close my eyes in the mid-afternoon shade.

The sun touches the horizon

The warm air still allows half-nakedness in the shade.
Dust and people settle for the evening.
